Sometimes the little things can makes us so upset! Whether we are a fitness professional having issues with our fellow staff members or an instructor leading a class, we can easily take too much too personally. Let’s assume that everyone is coming to the table, doing the best they can with what they have to work with. We often don’t know the whole story. Let me share a story I heard from a close friend of mine.
A woman was visiting a spa for the day. She called the front desk, and she inquired about various services and pricing for those services. The Spa Director had taken the call. After the conversation ended, the spa director was sure that this woman was going to give them problems, as she was rude and displayed major attitude over the phone! In her head, she thought… what a bitch! Soon the woman came down to the spa area. At the front desk she continued to give the employees a hard time. After inquiring about a final service and scheduling the appointments, the guest handed the Spa Director a note saying, “You probably need this too!” The note was a medical form indicating the woman was diagnosed with Stage 3 cancer.
You never know what people are going through. Rather than taking it negatively and internalizing it as our problem, assume most folks are doing the best they can with what they know and are dealing with at the moment. It may be valid or may not be according to our standards, but perhaps it will allow us to remain more positive.
